“There you are!” I hop up off the couch and set my book down as the front door slowly opens, revealing the setting sun as Bianca makes her way in.

Dane is slung over her shoulder in a sleeping lump as she balances him on her hip.

She quickly brings her finger to her lips and shushes me with a smile, tipping her head toward the absolutely knocked out child in her arms.

“Wow,” I whisper, drawing back with surprise and curiosity. “Feeding the ducks doesn’t usually tire him out quite that much. You guys were gone a while.”

“We have much to tell you,” Bianca says, her voice low and quiet as she walks into the living room and gently lays Dane down on the couch.

He stirs without opening his eyes, snuggling against a pillow and throw blanket.

“Did you have a good day?” I ask, noticing the smudges of dirt on Bianca’s pants and the way her hair is tied up in a messy ponytail.

She opens her mouth to respond, but is instantly interrupted.

“Best. Day. Ever.” Dane’s mumbling voice catches us both off guard as he declares in his half-asleep state that it was, in fact, the best day ever.

My heart squeezes. I knew they’d be fine. Bianca can talk to anyone and Dane is endlessly amusing. But best day ever? That makes me happier than words could ever say.

And the way it makes me feel about Bianca is scary.

“I’ll get him into bed.” I scoop Dane up and carry him to his bedroom, gently tucking him under the covers and stroking his forehead.

When I come back into the living room, Bianca is laying down on the couch, looking almost as wiped out as my son. She’s stretched horizontally across the sofa, lying flat on her back with a throw pillow under her head.

I can’t help but smile at how comfortable she looks. Right at home.

I sit next to her, taking up what little room she’s left me on the couch. “Why was this the best day ever?”

She shifts, propping herself up on her elbows and smiling wistfully. “We started out at the park. Fed the ducks. You know, I didn’t think I was really much of a duck person, but that was a blast.”

“Did Dane show you how to feed them out of your hand?” I smile, and without really thinking about it, I take her legs and lay them on top of my lap. It feels natural and right.

“Oh, yeah.” She giggles softly, tilting her head up to look at the ceiling. “It was so cool. But we didn’t just stay at the park.”

“I figured.” I chuckle, glancing at the clock. “I certainly didn’t give you enough stale bread to feed the ducks for almost six hours.”

“Sorry I didn’t call.”

“That’s okay. I trust you,” I say, meaning it. Shocked at how much I mean it. It really surprised me when I didn’t spend the day wondering about Dane or worrying if everything was okay like I generally do with every nanny or babysitter I’ve ever attempted to hire.
